Single Mother

Sunlight blinding,
A boy screams

In his mother’s arms.
Her hand planted on his hat,

An up-and-down tug-of-war.
No one else

Seems to be looking.
This boy is screaming.

This mother is trying
So hard, she must care,

Or she doesn’t enough
To find alternative methods

To getting her kid to sit
And stare silently

At a flock of pigeons,
Diving and twisting in the wind.
